FAQs: Troubleshooting

N64

  • Game won't load or keeps freezing – Dust is usually the culprit. Give the cartridge and slot a quick blow to clear it out, then clean both with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
  • Blank screen / no video – Match the AV cables to the correct color ports and make sure your TV is on the right input. If using an AV-to-HDMI converter, plug in the red/yellow/white cables, connect an HDMI cable to your TV, and power the converter via USB.
  • Picture looks fuzzy or distorted – This is pretty normal with composite cables on a modern TV. An S-Video cable or HDMI upscaler will clean up the picture noticeably.
  • Controller not responding or stick drifting – Try a different controller first. If the stick feels loose or moves on its own, it's worn out and needs replacing.
  • Power light is on but nothing happens – The Jumper Pak might need reseating. It sits on top of the console between the power and reset buttons — pop it out, blow out the bay, wipe the pins with isopropyl alcohol, and push it back in firmly.

Gamecube

  • Disc not reading – Wipe the disc from the center outward with a soft, damp cloth — no chemicals or scrubbing. If multiple discs aren't reading, the lens may need cleaning.
  • Blank screen / no video – Make sure the AV cable is fully plugged in and your TV is on the right input. No AV ports on your TV? You'll need an AV-to-HDMI converter powered via USB.
  • Controller not responding – Make sure it's firmly plugged in and you're using the right port. Check in-game which slot is active and match it accordingly.
  • Analog stick drifting or triggers feeling off – Hold X + Y + Start on the title screen to reset calibration. If it doesn't help, the controller likely needs replacing.
  • Console not powering on – Check that the power cable is firmly connected on both ends. Try a different outlet if the power light still won't come on.

Wii

  • Sensor bar not working / pointer won't appear – Make sure the sensor bar is sitting directly above or below your TV with nothing in the way. Bright light sources nearby can also throw it off.
  • Disc not reading – Even a fingerprint can cause issues. Hold the disc by the edges and wipe the underside from the center outward with a soft, damp cloth — no chemicals or scrubbing. Surface scratches are usually fine as long as they don't go all the way through.
  • Controller not responding – Make sure 2 AA batteries are inserted and the sensor bar is fully plugged in. Sync by pressing the button behind the battery cover on the remote and the button behind the front panel on the console — the light will flash then go solid when connected.
  • Blank screen / no video – Match the AV cables to the correct color ports and make sure your TV is on the right input. If using an AV-to-HDMI converter, connect the cables to the matching ports and power it via USB.
  • Console freezing or crashing – Make sure the console has enough ventilation. If it keeps happening, check that the disc is clean and the game data isn't corrupted.

Switch

  • Joy-Con not connecting or drifting – Reattach the Joy-Con to the console to re-sync. For drift, recalibrate through System Settings > Controllers > Calibrate Control Sticks. Persistent drift may require replacement.
  • Console not turning on – Charge the console for at least 30 minutes before powering on. If it still won't respond, perform a hard reset by holding the power button for 12 seconds, then press it again to restart.
  • Game not loading or freezing – Remove and reinsert the game cartridge, making sure the contacts are clean. For digital games, check that the software is fully downloaded and up to date.
  • No video on TV – Make sure the Switch is properly docked and the HDMI cable is firmly connected to both the dock and TV. Check that your TV is on the correct HDMI input.
  • Battery draining quickly – Lower screen brightness and turn on airplane mode when playing offline. If the battery drains unusually fast even on standby, it may need replacing.

DS Original

  • Game not loading – Remove the cartridge, blow out the slot to clear any dust, clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, and reinsert firmly.
  • Touch screen not responding or inaccurate – Wipe the screen with a soft cloth first to remove any smudges. If it's still off, recalibrate through the DS settings menu.
  • Console not turning on – Charge fully before use. If it still won't turn on, try a different charger — the original DS uses a unique connector that's easy to mix up.
  • Screen not displaying properly – Try restarting first. If the top or bottom screen stays blank, the ribbon cable in the hinge area may have loosened over time.
  • No sound from speakers – Check that the volume slider isn't all the way down. If headphones work but speakers don't, the headphone jack may be stuck in headphone mode.

DS Lite

  • Game not loading – Remove the cartridge, blow out the slot to clear any dust, clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, and reinsert firmly.
  • Touch screen not responding or inaccurate – Recalibrate through the DS settings menu. If it's still off, wipe the screen with a soft cloth to remove any smudges affecting accuracy.
  • Screens not displaying properly – Try restarting first. If the top screen flickers or goes blank, the hinge ribbon cable may have loosened over time.
  • Console not turning on – Charge fully before use. The DS Lite uses a different charger than the original DS, so make sure you have the right one.

DSi | DS XL

  • Game not loading – Clean the cartridge contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, blow out the slot, and reinsert firmly.
  • Touch screen not responding or inaccurate – Wipe the screen with a soft cloth first to remove any smudges. If it's still off, recalibrate through System Settings. If using a stylus, check that the tip isn't worn down.
  • Console not turning onTo power on the device, hit Power and after the screen turns on, hit the A button.
  • DSi camera not working – Check that the camera isn't disabled in parental controls. If it's enabled but still not working, a quick restart usually does the trick.

3DS | 3DS XL

  • Game not loading – Clean the cartridge contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, blow out the slot, and reinsert firmly.
  • Circle pad drifting – Recalibrate through System Settings > Other Settings > Circle Pad. If it persists, the circle pad may need replacing.
  • Touch screen not responding or inaccurate – Wipe the screen with a soft cloth first to remove any smudges. If it's still off, recalibrate through System Settings > Other Settings.
  • 3D effect not working – Make sure the 3D slider is turned up and you're holding the console at the right distance and angle for the camera to detect your face.
  • SD card not recognized – Remove and reinsert the SD card firmly. If it's still not detected, make sure it's formatted to FAT32 and isn't full.
  • Console not turning on – Charge fully before use. If it still won't respond, hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a restart.

Dualshock Controllers

  • Controller not connecting – For PS3: plug in via USB and press the PS button to sync. For PS4/PS5: hold PS + Share until the light bar flashes, then pair through Bluetooth settings.
  • Analog sticks drifting – Recalibrate through your console's controller settings. If it persists, the sticks are likely worn out and may need replacing.
  • Controller not charging – Try a different USB cable first as that's usually the culprit. If it still won't charge, the battery may need replacing.
  • Light bar staying red or controller disconnecting – This usually means the battery is low. Charge it fully and re-sync by pressing the small reset button on the back with a pin.
  • Touchpad not responding (PS4/PS5) – Restart the console and reconnect the controller. If it's still not working, press the small reset button on the back with a pin.

Playstation Consoles

PS1 / PS2
  • Disc not reading – Wipe the disc from the center outward with a soft, damp cloth. If multiple discs fail, the laser lens likely needs cleaning.
  • Blank screen / no video – Make sure AV cables are fully plugged in and your TV is on the right input. No AV ports on your TV? You'll need an AV-to-HDMI converter powered via USB.
  • Controller not responding – Reseat the controller firmly into the port. Try a different controller to rule out a port issue.
  • Console overheating – Make sure the vents aren't blocked and the console has enough airflow.
  • Memory card not recognized (PS2) – Remove and reinsert the memory card firmly. Try the other slot if it's still not detected.

PS3 / PS4 / PS5
  • Controller not connecting – PS3: plug in via USB and press the PS button. PS4: hold PS + Share until the light bar flashes. PS5: hold PS + Create until the light bar flashes. Then pair through Bluetooth settings.
  • Blank screen / no video – Check that the HDMI cable is firmly connected on both ends and your TV is on the correct input. Try a different cable or port if the issue persists.
  • Disc not reading – Wipe the disc from the center outward with a soft, damp cloth. If multiple discs fail, the disc drive may need servicing.
  • Console freezing or crashing – Check for system software updates. If it keeps happening, rebuild the database through Safe Mode.
  • Console overheating / loud fan – Keep the vents clear and make sure the console has good airflow. Avoid placing it in enclosed spaces.

PSP 2000/3000

  • Wi-Fi not connecting – Make sure the Wi-Fi switch on the left side is turned on. If it's on but still not connecting, double check your network password and make sure your router is on 2.4GHz — the PSP doesn't support 5GHz.
  • UMD disc not reading – Remove and reinsert the UMD firmly. If it still won't read, clean the lens gently with a soft cloth.
  • Analog stick drifting – Recalibrate through Settings first. If drift persists, the nub is likely worn out and may need replacing.
  • Console not turning on – Charge fully before use. Make sure the power switch is held up long enough — a quick flick won't always turn it on.
  • No video on TV – Connect using a PSP AV or component cable and make sure your TV is on the correct input. Enable display output through Settings > Connected Display.
